Whether you prefer a leisurely ride down the 10-mile beach with hard-packed sand or an adventure through endless trails that wind through the marshlands and maritime forests, there’s a biking journey awaiting for you and your family. About the Kiawah Island Bike Trails

With over 30 miles of paved bike trails on Kiawah Island, the possibilities are endless! These paths connect the island together, all the way from Vanderhorst Plantation to East Beach and even off the island to Freshfields Village and beyond.

If you stay inland, you’ll find an easy ride to any of the numerous beach boardwalks for an afternoon dip in the Atlantic or a sunset ride with family and friends. Ready for a mid-day snack or a mean? All of the restaurants on the island are also easily accessible by bike. Shopping, dining, entertainment — all are a quick ride away!

Catching on? Exploring the island by bike is undoubtedly one of the favorite Kiawah pastimes you can’t miss during your time here. You never know what you’ll see, and everything is a peddle away!

Hidden Watchtowers on Kiawah

Want to know a little secret that many people do not know about? There are 3 watchtowers in different locations throughout the island, some over 30 feet tall. These distinctive observation lookouts allow for panoramic marsh views and authentic nature viewing at its finest! A true nature lover’s dream, you’ll have the chance to see all types of wildlife from birds, deer, bobcats, and alligators. The only way to access these unique gems happens to be by bike.

One is in West Beach, off of Marsh Hawk Lane near Hole 6 of Cougar Point Golf Course. The spiraling staircase will take you above the trees for an overview of the marsh and parkway like you’ve never seen before. The photo from above was taken by drone right near this observation tower.

A second is located in the Vanderhorst Plantation, and the view from here reminds us of a scene from The Lion King. The Blue Heron Pond Tower gives you an incredible view of the pond where, most often, you’ll see deer and at least a couple of jumping fish.

Last but not least, the third watchtower on Kiawah Island is situated within Marsh Island Park. The views here are insanely breathtaking. You’ll feel like you’ve taken a step back in time with the area encompassing 8.1 acres of untouched natural habitat to enjoy. If you only chose to visit one of the towers, this would be our pick. You’ll find this observation tower in Vanderhorst Plantation, off of Governors Drive. You’ll see a sign off of the main paved biking trail for Marsh Island and, from here, you’ll be guided down a path with a bridge over the marsh before arriving at the tower.

Other Places to Visit While Biking on Kiawah Island

After savoring your time in nature, it’s time for a bite to eat and to socialize! The original bike trails on Kiawah Island were extended in 2010 to Freshfields Village, making it a short peddle away for more shopping, dining, and entertainment options right off the island.

If you want to “go the extra mile”, you can continue heading towards Seabrook Island to Bohicket Marina — where you will find the best sunset views around! Like Freshfields Village, this unique area features a wide selection of dining, shopping, and entertainment.

We recommend bringing a bottle of water, sunscreen, and, depending on the time of year, a can of bug spray. Aside from the essentials, don’t forget your camera (or phone)! We’re sure you’ll find countless “Instagram Worthy” spots throughout the island when you’ll wish you had a way to capture the moment.

Most bikes will have a bag on the front where you can store the necessities. However, if you’re heading for an all-day excursion, a light backpack always comes in handy!
